Why I Made Sunshine in a Bottle
I’ve always believed some of the best herbal formulas are the simplest ones.
You don’t necessarily need twelve different herbs in a bottle when two really good ones make sense together.
When I started learning more about saffron beyond its use as a culinary spice, I was fascinated.
This tiny, beautiful red thread has been treasured for centuries, and modern research has also taken an interest in saffron for its potential role in supporting mood and emotional well-being.
But I wanted something alongside it that brought a little calm to the formula.
That’s where passionflower came in.
Passionflower has been one of those herbs I’ve loved for years when things feel a little too loud, too busy, or too much.
Together, they made sense.
One for a little sunshine.
One for a little calm.
And Sunshine in a Bottle was born.
What’s Inside?
☀️ Saffron
Yes, that saffron.
The beautiful golden-red spice that’s one of the most treasured—and expensive—spices in the world.
Saffron comes from the tiny stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower, and every single thread has to be carefully harvested by hand.
Traditionally, saffron has been used for far more than cooking. It has a long history of use for supporting emotional well-being, and modern research has explored its potential role in supporting a positive mood.
There’s something else about my saffron that matters to me.
It is ethically sourced through fair-trade channels directly from farmers in Afghanistan.
Knowing where my herbs come from has always been important to me, and I love being able to use an ingredient that supports both the people taking it and the farmers growing and harvesting it.
🌿 Passionflower
If saffron is the sunshine in this formula, passionflower is the deep breath.
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) has a long history of traditional herbal use for promoting relaxation and helping settle an overactive, restless mind.
It’s gentle, calming, and pairs beautifully with saffron.
Because sometimes feeling better isn’t about getting more energy or forcing yourself into a good mood.
Sometimes you just need things to feel a little quieter.

Organic Passionflower, Saffron, Organic Non-GMO Vegetable Glycerin, Water.
That’s it.
No alcohol. No artificial colors. No synthetic flavors. No unnecessary fillers.
How I Use It
Shake well before using.
Take 1–2 droppers full (approximately 30–60 drops), 2–3 times daily or as needed.
You can take it directly or add it to a small amount of water or another beverage.
When taking it directly, I like to hold it under my tongue or along the gumline for about 30 seconds before swallowing.
My little tip with this one:
Consistency.
Sunshine in a Bottle isn’t something I personally think of as a “bad day emergency bottle.”
I prefer working it into a regular routine and taking it around the same time each day.
Some people may prefer taking it later in the day because of the relaxing nature of passionflower.
As with most herbs, pay attention to your body.
We’re all different.
Why Glycerin Instead of Alcohol?
This is something people have asked me about for years.
Traditional tinctures are usually made with alcohol because alcohol is an excellent herbal solvent.
But I chose a different route.
I make my tinctures with a vegetable glycerin base because I wanted them to be accessible to people who prefer or need to avoid alcohol.
That includes people living an alcohol-free lifestyle, people in recovery, and simply anyone who doesn’t want alcohol in their herbal products.
Glycerin also has a naturally pleasant, slightly sweet flavor, which makes these tinctures much easier to take than many traditional alcohol-based extracts.

Handmade in Small Batches
Binford’s has never been about mass-producing bottles on some giant assembly line.
I started making herbal products because I genuinely loved herbs, loved learning about them, and loved helping people find simple ways to incorporate them into everyday life.
That hasn’t changed.
Sunshine in a Bottle is still made by hand in small batches, using ingredients I’ve intentionally chosen.
There may be easier ways to do it.
But after all these years, this is still how I want to make my products.

I love herbs.
I’ve worked with them for years, and obviously I believe they can be a wonderful part of our everyday wellness routines.
But natural doesn’t automatically mean appropriate for everyone.
